How to cut artificial flower stems in a right way?

You bought a gorgeous bunch of artificial flowers. Ideally, you unbox them, hold them up, and picture them perfectly arranged in your favorite vase.

But sometimes reality hits. 

The stems are too long. They won't sit the way you want. You try to cut it with a scissor but may find it still hard to cut.

Can this stem really snap?

Before you bend anything, you need to know what kind of stem you're holding. Not all stems can be bent. Maybe the description of product is not detailed enough.

And if you purchase a branch in blind, you might end up with bruised hands, snapped plastic, or a flower that can't be used the way you wanted.

One quick note: Some flowers have cloth heads and leaves attached to all-plastic stems — these cannot be bent at all. Since brands don't always make this clear, it's worth checking before you buy, especially if you know you'll need to shape your stems for a particular vase.

 

Bending/Cutting Skills You Need to Know

Type 1 — All-Plastic Stems

Just don't bend them. Forcing it will leave you with sore hands and a stem that still won't cooperate. If length is the issue, try a taller vase instead.

 

Type 2 — Plastic + Wire + Bending Nodes

This is the most common type for some artificial flowers — and the most bendable.

Here's the step-by-step guide:

Step 1:Find the nodes — Look for small joint-like points on the stem. These are designed to be bent.

Step 2: Choose your position-Hold the stem up to your vase and find the node closest to your desired height.

Step 3: Bend with skills-Hold firmly on both sides of the node and bend back and forth 3–5 times until the internal wire breaks and the stem locks into its new angle.

Please noted that the stems of artificial flowers real flowers to achieve the perfect height. You need to estimate the required height, select the node closest to that point, and firmly bend the stem back and forth with both hands; typically, bending it 3 to 5 times is enough to snap it off.

There is a very important detail that most brand won’t tell you: the break point should be at least 4 inches up from the bottom.

Attempting to break the stem lower than 3 inches up will extremely difficult. If you insist on that specific height, you could try securing the stem with tools like cable ties or wrapping it several times with tape, though this may not be feasible if the stem is very thick.

Step 4: Seal the end-If you plan to rearrange later, seal the bent tip with a hot glue gun to prevent exposed wire from scratching anyone.

Type 3 — Plastic + Wire (No Nodes)

Use Hand only just won't cut It.

After cutting, always remember to seal the end with hot glue for safety.
