There's a famous Chinese novel called *Dream of the Red Chamber*, written centuries ago. One scene has been remembered for generations—a young woman named Daiyu burying fallen flowers.

She wasn't being romantic. She was genuinely heartbroken. She stepped outside the human perspective and saw flowers as living beings, not decorations. When they fell, she couldn't bear to see them trampled into the mud. So she gathered them up and laid them to rest.

As a child, I thought she was overly sensitive. But after years of buying flowers, watching them fade, and tossing out wilted stems, I finally understood.

She wasn't mourning petals. She was mourning the fact that beauty disappears.We're not as melancholic as Daiyu. But we agree with her on one thing: a plant's life matters.

A rose on a branch belongs to the sun, the rain, and the wind. Cut and placed in a vase, who does it belong to now? It could have aged slowly, naturally. Instead, it spends all its energy in two or three days, just to look beautiful for us.

And woody plants? If you don't treat the cut ends properly, they can't even drink water. They just dry out, wither. They were meant to be part of a tree, part of a forest.

When you think about it that way, using a flower's life for a few days of pleasure feels a little unfair.
